New to the Internet?
(if not, proceed to the
bottom of this page to
download WinMX)
Here are some important
facts to keep in mind
while online:
Offensive and/or
graphic material is
present on the internet.
Whether you use the WWW,
UseNet, Email, IRC, or
P2P to find information,
there is always a chance
you could be exposed to
very offensive
material. Young people
should always have the
guidance and supervision
of a responsible adult
when using the internet.
Do not run executable
files downloaded from
any untrusted source.
A malicious executable
file could erase data
from your system, do
serious damage to your
software configuration,
compromise your privacy,
and affect other systems
connected to yours. An
anti-virus scan is not
always enough to
guarantee a file isn't
malicious. Fortunately
most newer WWW, UseNet,
Email, IRC, and P2P
clients (including
WinMX) have features to
guard against
accidentally downloading
executable file types.
Playing/viewing media
files or documents from
unknown or untrusted
sources could be
dangerous.
This applies to files
you obtain online from
sources such as the WWW,
UseNet, Email, IRC, or
P2P, as well as files
you obtain offline from
sources such as data CDs
and DVDs. Some file
players and viewers
(especially older ones)
have bugs which may make
them vulnerable to a
malicious data-pattern
within a media file. A
compromised media player
or file viewer can be
just as dangerous to
your system as a
malicious executable
file. Make sure your
media-player and
file-viewer software is
always up-to-date.
The internet is not
100% anonymous.
Anytime you connect
to any other system,
whether it be via the
WWW, UseNet, Email, IRC,
or P2P, that connection
is made using something
called "Internet
Protocol" or I.P. for
short. Every connection
over IP involves your IP
address. An IP address
is a 32-bit number that
is unique to every
internet connection.
While an IP address does
not directly identify
exactly who is on the
other end, it does
identify the Internet
Service Provider (or ISP
for short) responsible
for that address. Most
ISPs log their
individual user's IP
address assignments.
The internet is a
public place.
Just like when you are
physically standing in a
public place, if you act
irresponsibly online
(such as harassing
others or copyright
violations), whether it
be via WWW, UseNet,
Email, IRC, or P2P,
there may be
consequences. While
online you may also be
exposed to other
individuals who are
acting in an
irresponsible manner.
NEVER disclose personal
information or passwords
to someone online unless
you are 100% certain it
is safe. ALWAYS be
familiar with your
WWW/UseNet/Email/IRC/P2P
browser software
(especially
Ignore/Blocking
features) before you use
it.
The makers of your
internet client/browser
software do not control
the content viewed
through it.
The programmers that
make your
WWW/UseNet/Email/IRC/P2P
client/browser software
are no more able to
control the content
viewed through it than
the people that make
your TV set, radio, or
photocopier are able to
control their use. The
makers of WinMX only
make software, and do
not control any internet
sharing or indexing
servers of any kind.
WinMX uses purely
decentralized internet
protocols, information
and searches are hosted,
indexed, and routed
purely between end-user
computers without
assistance of any kind.
If you share files using
WinMX P2P software, it
is purely from your
computer.
WinMX from winmx.com
does not contain
ANYTHING besides WinMX.
No spyware or other
parasite programs will
ever be in our
software. We respect
your privacy and
security.
